Home Business Marketing - SEO
With more and more people using search engines every day, using keywords effectively in your website text is more vital than ever before. Let’s discuss keywords?
Keywords are simply the words and phrases that humans use when they search the web. That’s it! Somewhat confusing, a keyword is not necessarily a single word, but can be a phrase or list of several words, but we still call them keywords.
Keywords are simply the words and phrases that humans use when they search the web. That’s it! Somewhat confusing, a keyword is not necessarily a single word, but can be a phrase or list of several words, but we still call them keywords.
Short Tail
The shorter, more competitive keywords are sometimes referred to as the “short tail”. An example short tail keyword that we optimise our site for is “internet marketing”. As you can imagine, this is a quite competitive term, with many internet marketing companies competing for high rankings on this term. Other example short tail terms in this area are “SEO”, “online marketing”, “search marketing” and more. So the short tail keywords are usually very common searches, being searched for many times per day.
Long Tail
The long tail of search can be a gold mine for search traffic. These are less competitive terms that are not searched for as often. Usually they are longer keywords, like for example “internet marketing company dublin ireland”. This is likely to be searched FAR less often than the short tail terms I mentioned above. In fact, a Google employee reported said recently (and I’m still looking for the source on this) that “40% of all searchs on Google everyday have never been seen before”. These are long tail keywords, most definitely!
How You Can Use This Information
We know that both these short tail and long tail ideas exist – how do you take advantage of this for your website? Lets deal with the short tail first – what you should do is create webpages/blog posts/articles (”pages”) targeting each one of these short tail terms. It may seem like a lot of keywords but there are a finite number of short tail terms so it’s possible to hit them all. Start out with targetting only one, e.g. my company started targeting “internet marketing” first, and will expand to others later.
It’s not actually possible to target long tail keywords, yet we will still try, and what’s more, succeed! How is this possible? Simply by adding naturally written content to your website you will be hitting tens and possibly hundreds of long tail terms with each article. Each one of these keywords will be searched very rarely, but the cumulative effect of hundreds, and eventually thousands of long tail terms will be a lot of visits to your website. So keep adding interesting and valuable content to your website as often as possible.
Write Naturally and Avoid Keyword Stuffing
Search engines count the number of times a keyword appears on a page. The more times a term appears, the more relevant the page is to a search for that term – up to a point! That point is when your webpage starts reading like it was written by a marketer on speed and the keyword appears every 3rd word. The best advice is to write naturally – for humans! Write your copy for humans including your keywords a few times and the search engines will take care of the rest. There are also concepts like “stemming” – where search engines know that “target”, “targets”, “targeting”, “targeted”, etc all have the same stem and are related. A similar, more advanced topic is Latent Semantic Indexing which is outside the scope of this article and deserves one all of it’s own!

Keyword Percentage
Some people ask me “what percentage should the keyword be per page”. The way to figure this out is to count the total number of words on the page, and count the number of times the keyword appears, as a percentage of this. Search engine optimisation consultations often quote numbers of 6-8% with a maximum of 12-13%. I would definitely recommend sticking to the lower end of these numbers, but again if there’s one thing you should take from this article it’s write often, and naturally, for a human audience and let the numbers take care of themselves.

Success Equals Action
I have been reading some interesting comments about success and how to create it in the Home Business environment and what entrepeneurs do to be successful. I have dragged out some of the statements that make sense to me I have listed here for you as well.
* Keep your goals in your vision, write them down and keep it visible
* Do not give meaning to distractions, stay focussed
* Ensure you are doing activities that keep you moving towards your goals
* Understand that procrastination leads to selfdoubt and keeps you stuck
* Decision is the opposite of procrastination
* To overcome procrastination and eradicate fear take action
* Challenge your paradigms about how you can make money
* Focus on what is working and be grateful
* Procrastination will lead to failure
* When identifying your goals be specific
If you are serious about setting up your own Home Business, spend time to identify your goals and be specific. Business success is timing, timing is making the decision to take action.

HOME BUSINESS INCOME POSSIBILITIES
In June 2009, a couple in Sydney earnt themselves an extraordinary monthly income of just over $250,000 USD. I know this sound to good to be true, but this couple who had been working in the Network Marketing industry since February last year were on the brink of losing everything until they found this amazing Home Business Opportunity.
Recently I read that a new Home Business is set up every 8 seconds, and alot of these fail for a number of reasons including a lack of commitment to ensure they do everything possibly including learning new ways of marketing their Home Business.
The other big factor in their success was, following a tried and tested path of other successful entrepeneurs in the Company without reinventing the wheel. This is a classic lesson for Home Business owners - learn to leverage the success of others in the business, thereby cutting your learning time in half.

TIP #1 - Home Business Entrepeneurs
What Type of Home Business...
When looking for Home Business Opportunities, there are a couple of key things that will help you decide what might work best for you. I have broken them down into what I think are three key groups - these are:
The second business - Network Marketing, is easiest to understand if you divide it into two types of compensation plans: the first is, Multi Level Marketing (MLM) where a percentage of your profit is passed up the line to someone above you; the second, Non MLM companies are I think much better as the profit stays in your pocket. Network Marketers are self employed, but can have a central support system (the main company), with products already developed and are usually found in the Home Business arena.
The third type of business is a Franchise business. Now I have never owned or run a franchised business but the thing that put me off the most when I did my research, was the lack of flexibility in the company advertising structure, which meant I had no way of branding my business in a unique way and secondly, the costs, it usually starts with a hefty buy-in and then you have ongoing franchise fees.
The reasons I chose to set up an Non MLM Home Business are as follows:
Proven Step by Step system
A strong compensation plan - how much will I earn?
Products that I would use or be happy to recommend
Preferably no direct selling or harassing friends and family
Must be able to manage my own time
No ongoing fees or losing profit up the line
No merchandise to store or stocktake
I wanted to work from the internet via a phone and a computer
Work anywhere in the world, because I like travelling
I could market my business my way
Not party plan - no offence to those who run those businesses
Training must be provided and
A minimal financial investment to get started
Each of us when considering a Home Based Business will need to have our own checklist, this was mine and I think it is pretty sound and covers off on all the big questions. I believe that the future is working towards more opportunities to work from home and take control of your life. The opportunities are endless and it will require a bit of work, but you certainly do not need to be working 70 or 80 hours a week for someone who does not appreciate your effort. It is about working smarter not longer.........your thoughts?
